Twitter to launch new in-app system with ‘Request Verification’ option

Twitter, a microblogging and social networking service provider, is reportedly developing an in-app system for making verification requests.

Sources familiar with the matter have stated that the company has added a new option, ‘Request Verification’, which will be shown on the settings screen of the redesigned Twitter accounts. The latest feature has not been launched by the company to the public.

This system in Twitter had been developed for the purpose of verification, which was previously a topic of great confusion among users, regarding what it means to be verified on the platform. However, the system can now aid in identifying the credibility of the high-profile accounts.

In 2018, the company announced its plan to no longer prioritize the verification system and instead focus on its efforts to bring about election integrity. Following this announcement, it did not entirely eliminate the verification system but slowed its pace. Recently, it has begun the verification process of the authoritative health experts who tweet credible information regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

These services will be further extended through the anticipated launch of the new system that enables individual users to make a request for account verification. The company will publicly document the necessary criteria or rules for users to be verified, to ensure high accuracy and transparency. The revamp process of the system has been underway; however, it does not reveal the possible launch date of the new system or the content of the new guidelines.

The social networking service is often criticized for the ways it applies the rules, including the account bans for those that break the terms of service, the removal of the entire tweets or how it conducts fact-checks. These signify that the new documentation and system launch may not necessarily put an end to criticism. However, it could help establish a baseline, permitting the service to further identify and tease out the exceptions to the new rules that could require rewritten rules in the near future.
