The US Air Force has presented a whopping $3 million award to an Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC) innovation project. The award goes by the name small business innovation research (SBIR) program award.
The project under the aegis of AFIMSC, Aerial Applications and Air Force Innovation Hub Network (AFWERX) is said to use drones and machine learning to bring a paradigm shift in the way the Air Force Civil Engineer Center collates data for its environmental mission.
Assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics Dr. Will Roper highlighted the flexibility and agility of the Air Force. He also said that the award echoes the ability of the Air Force to work with a company.
Marc Vandeveer, Chief innovation officer at AFIMSC, was full praise for his teammates and noted that the company achieved success very quickly. Shedding light on the project, he stated that the innovation office stood up no later than November 2018, with the drone project boasted to be the one of the first innovation initiatives embarked by the AFIMSC.
It is worth mentioning that the SBIR award is a part of the dual-use program motivating small businesses to have a goal of creating scalable solutions by completing innovative federal research and development to boost both private and government industry.
Emilie Miller, AFIMSC innovation office project manager, stressed the relevance of winning the award which alludes to the renewed focus of the Air Force on innovation and fostering capabilities with strong execution of money and solid commercial partnerships.
Considering the addition pumping of funds and the SBIR award, Miller is of the opinion that the technology will be applied to a battery of installation and mission support requirements, going beyond environmental management.
