Sony sells 10 million Play Station consoles just 294 days after launch

Sony has reportedly managed to sell around 10 million Play Station 5 consoles in 249 days after its launch in November 2020. The company had sold approximately 7.8 million PS5 units as of April 2021.

In comparison, approximately 10 million units of the Play Station 4 were sold by Sony within 271 days timespan after it was unveiled back in 2013, making PS5 the fastest-selling gaming console in the company’s history.

The Play Station 5’s success can be credited to the design of the console, quality of early exclusives, the strength of the brand, and its successful launch in China, cited sources with relevant information.

Jim Ryan, the CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment was quoted saying that while the PS5 console has been selling well and has reached more households at a faster pace as compared to Sony’s other consoles, its demand is relatively higher than supply.

This news comes amid the ongoing global chip shortage which has severely affected the automobile and consumer electronic goods industries. In this context, Ryan added that though the global semiconductor shortage is posing a challenge, the company is working on increasing its inventory levels.

Notably, most of the official figures published since the PS5 and Xbox Series X were launched suggest that PS5 sales have been comparatively higher than its competitor despite shipping issues and hardware shortages faced by both Sony and Microsoft Corporation.

The Xbox Series X/S has sold 6.5 million units as of June 30, 2021, which is higher than the previous sales estimates of 5 million for Xbox 360 and 5.7 million for Xbox One in the same period.

Despite their obvious success, both Sony and Microsoft are navigating through hardware shortages as well as shipping issues, which has prevented them to adequately cater to the market demand. Some studies have also shown that the supply of next-gen gaming hardware will not match the demand until 2022.
