MediaTek Inc. develops new 5G chipset for mid-range smartphones
MediaTek, a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company, has reportedly introduced 7nm 5G chipset named Dimensity 720, an addition to the existing Dimensity chipset series, for mid-tier devices segment.
MediaTek claims that Dimensity 720 chipsets are built with UltraSave technology which enhances the battery life by utilizing network and contact awareness intelligence to manage the operations.
As per trustworthy reports, the latest chipset houses two Arm Cortex-A76 clocking at 2GHz in the octa-core CPU complemented by Arm Mali G57 GPU, universal flash storage (UFS) v 2.2 and LPDDR4X memory.
The new chipset has features like 90Hz frame rate display, optimized video capabilities with MiraVision HDR 10+ video playback, Bluetooth 5.1, 4K recording, camera configuration options with support up to 64MP or 20+16 MP dual camera, integrated with MediaTek’s APU. It also boasts, Voice Wakeup (VoW) to mitigate dual-mic voice suppression and power consumed by always-on voice assistants.
To suffice the modern-day connectivity demands, Dimensity 720 also encompasses 5G and 4G dual SIM, two-carrier aggregation (2CC CA), and voice over new radio (VoNR). The chipset also features both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) global sub- 6GHz 5G networks in North America, Asia, and Europe.
Dr. Yenchi Lee, MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit Deputy General Manager, quoted that the chip is highly power-efficient, showcases impressive performance, and advanced display and imaging technologies. All of this together will help brands manufacture differentiated 5G devices for customers all across the globe. The Dimensity is part of MediaTek’s 5G chipset family ranging from Dimensity 1000 for high-end devices to 700 and 800 series for mid-tier segments.
MediaTek has reportedly announced that the first Dimensity 720-powered smartphones are expected to arrive in the following months. The Dimensity 820 phones right now cost around $250, and it is further anticipated that the 720 phones will cost less than those of 820 series.
