Hyundai Motor Company & Advent sign JDA to develop fuel cell technology

Hyundai Motor Company and Advent Technologies have entered into a joint development agreement, following the assessment of Advent’s Proprietary Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) technology. The evaluation was focused on the ability of Advent’s technology to fulfill the requirements of Hyundai’s high-temperature fuel cells.

As part of the agreement, both entities will establish commercial criteria for MEA supply, assess the fuel cell technology for Hyundai’s heavy-duty and stationary application and facilitate the development of the HMC-Advent Ion Pair™ MEA. Hyundai will also evaluate advanced stack cooling technologies to enable them to perform efficiently under different operating conditions.

Chief Technology Officer of Advent Technologies, Dr. Emory De Castro, commented that the collaboration with Hyundai has given the firm an opportunity to showcase its new R&D and manufacturing facility, which will involve the production of the Ion Pair™ MEAs and other innovative products.

Vice President at Hyundai Motor Company, Seung Hyun Hong, stated that the Ion Pair HMC-Advent MEA will be developed as a combination of material technology and HT-PEM know-how of both firms. It will play an important role in the decarbonization goal and produce best-in-class fuel cells for high temperature operations, he added.

The joint development agreement will be beneficial in revolutionizing the global MEA market. It will increase the energy density as compared to the currently used HT-PEM MEAs. The JDA also includes assistance to Hyundai in bringing its vision for a hydrogen-powered society to life.

Advent Technologies Holdings, Inc. is a U.S.-based company emphasizing the development of fuel cell technology for the renewable energy sector. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, it has branches in California, Greece, Germany, the Philippines, and Denmark. It also holds a number of intellectual properties with patents and licenses for fuel cell technology.

Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967, with a strong presence in more than 200 countries and 120,000 employees working globally.
