Ford Motor Co. to launch hands-free driving system for Mustang Mach-E
American multinational automaker, Ford Motor Company, is reportedly planning to integrate a hands-free driving system in its soon to be launched electric Mustang Mach-E sports utility vehicle model. Sources close to the matter stated that this new feature will be a part of Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 Prep Package and will be a direct competitor in the high-tech automobile turf, which is currently dominated by Tesla Inc.
Ford mentioned in a statement that although the new system won’t be available until the second half of 2021, buyers of the Mach-E SUV models in Mexico can opt for the hardware that will support Ford’s hands-free driving technology.
The automaker further claimed that the new feature is a next step for the company’s Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering technology and the addition of the Hands-Free feature is a first for Ford.
According to industry experts, the automaker is planning to take on its competitors General Motors Co.’s Super Cruise and Tesla’s Autopilot. Both these systems enable highway drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel, however they are expected to keep their eyes on the road.
If sources are to be believed, Ford advertised its technology as more advanced as it utilizes various infrared cameras which focus on driver’s eye movement, even through sunglasses.
Ford’s Global Director of Battery Electric Vehicles was reported saying that the company’s research has proven that after seven minutes of the car driving itself, the passengers will trust the system and will focus on doing other tasks, such as looking around or texting. He further confirmed that no cars currently on sale are autonomous.
Although the company did not disclose the price of the new hands-free system, Ford claims that the system can operate for more than 100,000 miles on highways in Canada and in the U.S.
