Bigbasket confirms data breach of 2 crore users during cyberattack

In a recent turn of events, leading Indian online supermarket Bigbasket has reportedly faced a potential data breach, with information of around 2 crores of its users being leaked. According to reliable sources, the leaked information included phone numbers, addresses, location, IP addresses of login, and date of birth among other details.
The news comes along the heels of U.S-based multinational cyber security company Cyble Inc., discovering Bigbasket’s database on a cyber-crime market during their routine Dark Web monitoring in which the company’s database was being sold for around USD 40,000.
Sources close to the matter claimed that the data leak displayed a files with the table name ‘member_member’ and the SQL file containing the user information, which was of the size of over 15 GB. The company was informed about the breach a day after it was detected.
Speaking of data privacy, Bigbasket assured that details of debit and credit cards of the users were not exposed during the breach. The company mentioned in a statement that it does not store any financial data on the online database and that they prioritize the customers’ confidentiality and privacy.
The recently deployed advanced data security framework as well as the information management technologies will allow the proactive engagement of top of the line information security experts, Bigbasket added.
According to credible reports, India has witnessed a 37% rise in the number of cyberattacks in the first quarter of 2020 as compared to the fourth quarter of 2019 which was recorded to be around 40,700,057.
