Adobe confirms acquisition of Substance tools creator Allegorithmic

Adobe Inc. has recently made an announcement confirming that it has acquired the French software company Allegorithmic, which had developed the Substance tools used by visual effect artists, designers, animators and AAA game makers for creating textures. Adobe said it would be bringing many technologies of Allegorithmic to its several Creative Cloud tools, most of which provide complementary tools already.

Sources with knowledge of the matter mentioned that besides these integrations, the key benefit of this acquisition is that 3D design and creation of 2D content is increasingly gaining significance among the creatives who use the tools of Adobe. By acquiring Allegorithmic, Adobe will bring technology and talent to the company, since it has started focusing on 3D.

For the record, the company offers Adobe Dimension and had also released Adobe Aero more recently, which is aimed at creating AR experiences. Apparently, Adobe had invested in Allegorithmic previously and its Dimension already features integration with Substance tools, which indicates that this deal had been in the pipeline for a while now, the sources commented.

Scott Belsky, chief product office of Adobe, had reminded that most of Adobe’s important products today are born out of acquisitions, including Photoshop. The company has always incorporated new DNA and has grown through all those crucial acquisitions, he stated. Belsky said that Adobe is always looking towards the acquisitions to see how they can change it and Allegorithmic is one of those acquisitions for Creative Cloud.

Belsky noted that although Substance has been available for over 15 years, the industry is witnessing substantial tailwind now that it has become easier to render an image as compared to setting up a video or photo shoot then retouch and edit those images. Adobe is trying to take advantage of that tailwind as much as possible, he explained.
